Why do I need a dental extraction?
A dental extraction may need to be performed for a variety of reasons. If a tooth has been greatly damaged by tooth decay, periodontitis, or dental trauma, it may be too weak to repair with another restorative service. Teeth are also removed due to crowding and damaging other teeth or not having enough room in the jaw to grow in properly, which is often the case for wisdom teeth. We always want our patients to keep their natural teeth whenever possible, but sometimes a dental extraction is the best option for your custom treatment plan.
How long does it take to recover from a dental extraction?
Recovery times vary from patient to patient, depending on their unique healing process and how many teeth need to be removed. Generally, we recommend taking at least two or three days off to recover from a surgical tooth extraction, sometimes a little longer for wisdom teeth removal. Too much activity too soon after a dental extraction can cause the clot in the socket to come loose, which slows the healing process. After a few days, you can return to non-strenuous activities, but you should continue eating soft foods for several additional days after that.
Are dental extractions painful?
Dental extractions are one of the more invasive restorative procedures, but thanks to modern medicine and advancements in dentistry, they are nothing to be scared of. Our tooth extraction procedures always begin with a local anesthetic being administered into the gums near the teeth to completely numb them. We will also provide you with instructions for managing pain afterward. If you are nervous about your tooth extraction or any other treatment, our team offers nitrous oxide and sleep sedation, which can help relieve anxiety and make your experiences more pleasant.
